A slightly imperfect fit in casual shoes may only become noticeable after a long walk. Safety shoes can reveal the problem much sooner. The protective toe area needs enough space, while the heel should remain stable as you walk. Shoes that are too short can press against the toes. Shoes that are too large can allow the foot to slide, creating friction and making every step less secure.
When ordering safety shoes online, do not rely only on the size printed inside an old pair. Last shape, width, socks and foot volume all affect fit. Measuring both feet and following a short movement test gives you a more useful starting point.

Measure your foot length in five steps
You need two sheets of paper, a thin pen, tape and a ruler or measuring tape. Measure both feet while standing. Many people have one foot that is slightly longer, so use the larger measurement when choosing a starting size.
- Place one short edge of the paper directly against a straight wall and tape it down so it cannot move.
- Stand on the paper in your work socks, with your heel touching the wall and your weight distributed evenly.
- Mark the end of your longest toe. Keep the pen upright so the mark does not move too far forward or backward.
- Measure the distance from the wall-side edge of the paper to the mark, in centimetres.
- Repeat the process with the other foot and record the longer result.
Do not measure only a removable insole. It may be compressed, curled or different from the usable internal length of the shoe.

What if you are between two sizes?
If your measurement falls between two chart values, the larger size is usually the better first size to try, especially if you want more toe room. The heel must still remain stable and the midfoot must be held securely. A shoe that is too large does not automatically become suitable when worn with a thicker sock.
For wide feet, extra length may not solve the real problem. Check width and length separately. If the little toe or forefoot feels compressed while there is already enough space in front, look for a shape that provides more forefoot width instead of simply choosing a longer size.
Seven fit checks before your first shift
Try new safety shoes indoors on a clean floor. This lets you assess the fit while helping you keep the footwear in returnable condition. Test both shoes, because each foot may behave differently.
1. Check toe room while standing
Your toes should be able to move without pressing against the protective toe area. Pay particular attention to your longest toe and little toe. Light contact may be normal, but continuous pressure or compression is a warning sign.
2. Check heel hold while walking
Walk for several minutes at both normal and faster pace. A small amount of heel movement can occur, but the heel should not repeatedly lift or slide out. Persistent movement can create rubbing and may indicate that the shoe is too large or that the fastening is too loose around the midfoot.
3. Adjust the fit over the instep
Fasten the shoe so the midfoot feels held without being squeezed. The GemChve model uses a dial fastening system that can be adjusted in small steps. Overtightening can create pressure or numbness. Leaving it too loose can allow the foot to slide forward.
4. Test forefoot flex
Rise onto your toes and take several deliberate rolling steps. The shoe should bend near the same area as your forefoot. If you feel a hard pressure from above or in front, adjust the fastening and check the size again.
5. Squat and reach down
Bend your knees as if you were lifting a box from a low shelf. Your toes should not strike the front during the movement, and your heel should not be pulled out of the shoe.
6. Change direction
Take controlled side steps and turn slowly. If your foot moves noticeably from side to side inside the shoe, it may not provide enough lateral hold for your foot shape. Choosing a longer shoe often makes this problem worse.
7. Perform a ten-minute check
Wear the shoes indoors for at least ten minutes, then remove them. Look for strong red pressure marks and notice any tingling or numbness. New shoes may feel secure, but they should not cause pain. Do not assume that a rigid protective toe area will stretch later.
What common fit problems can mean
Your toes touch the front while walking: The shoe may be too short, or your foot may be sliding forward.
Your heel slips: Adjust the fastening first. If slipping continues, the shoe may be too large or the heel shape may not match your foot.
Your little toe feels compressed: More length is not always the answer. You may need a roomier forefoot shape.
Your instep feels numb: Loosen the fastening and redistribute the pressure. If numbness remains, the shoe may not provide enough volume over the instep.
One foot fits and the other does not: Choose the size using the longer foot and adjust each fastening separately.
